Overview The economics programmes at Shandong University provide a well rounded coverage of the whole area of economics. The department aims to provide students with a thorough grounding in the analytical methods of economics and to develop their skills in applying these methods to a diverse range of problems, both microeconomic and macroeconomic, in analyzing and constructing complex arguments and in communicating these effectively.

Degree structureThe program is scheduled for four years. The first year curriculum will give an essential foundation in the subject, equipping students with general knowledge. Every student will take Chinese, calculus, computer and etc. During the second year, students take introductory economic courses including Probability and Mathematical Statistics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, accounting, management and etc. In the third year, some further courses with regard to optional specialization on particular fields of application and advanced theories are taken. In the last year, students take no formal classes but dissertation and internship are required.

Teaching and assessment The degree program is structured around two semesters each year. Each semester consists of 16 weeks followed by revision time and examinations. This undergraduate program utilizes a range of teaching methods including lectures as well as classes. Students will have around 12 hours of lectures and classes each week. Courses are assessed through a mixture of group work, coursework, project and examinations; the weighting of each of these components will vary according to the academic requirement of the courses. Each student has a tutor who is available to offer general guidance and assistance with both academic and personal concerns on an individual basis.

Requirement for the majorThe major in Economics leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The total number of credits required for the major is 120. All courses taken for the major must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of C or higher.

Careers A degree in Economics from Shandong University will help students to develop a wide range of essential skills such as analytical problem solving, teamwork, research and organizing and communicating information. The majority of graduates from the department follow their degree with a career in finance, banking, accounting or management both in the commercial and public sectors.
