The predecessor of this major is the "mechanical manufacturing process and equipment" major established in 1972, began full-time undergraduate education in 1978, obtained a bachelor's degree authorization in 1983, and was adjusted to mechanical design and manufacturing and its automation major in 1998 according to the Ministry of Education's "Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Colleges and Universities". The mechanical engineering discipline on which the major relies is the provincial key discipline and the backbone discipline of the Hubei Provincial Automobile Industry Advantage Characteristic Discipline Group, and has the right to award master's and master's degrees.
