The School of Mechanical Engineering is a well-known school nationally in China, with its comprehensive strength and international influence at the top of domestic schools and some of its research at the leading edge internationally.The school has an annual funding of more than $200 million and has established a wide range of personnel training and scientific research cooperation agreements with domestic and foreign famous automobile enterprises.Laboratories including the National Laboratory for Tank Transmission Technology, the National Engineering Laboratory for Electric Vehicles, the Laboratory for Vehicle Power Technology, the Testing Laboratory for Vehicle Emission, and the National Engineering Training Center.

The school mainly Researches areas of vehicle transmission, electronic vehicles, vehicle suspension, new concept vehicles, vehicle structure strength and vibration noise, high power diesel engine technology, engine combustion and emissions, engine superchargers, advanced machining. The research on laser micro-nano fabrication leads research in China and vehicle transmission and new concept vehicles research has reached the leading edge internationally.

The School offers bachelor programs in Mechanical Engineering and Vehicle Engineering and masters programs in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Energy & Dynamics Engineering, and Transport Engineering.During the undergraduate period, the core subjects including mechanics, mechanical engineering, computer science and technology, and control science and engineering. The discipline studies the field of vehicle products design and production, mechanical engineering machinery products, a large number of mechatronic product manufacturing processes, the applications of electronic and computer technology to achieve design automation, and the creation of the theory and methods.

During graduate period, students will systematically master in-depth expert theory from the mechanical engineering, power engineering, the engineering of thermal physics and transportation engineering fields. Moreover, students can work independently and undertake professional, technical, or management work. Graduates will leave BIT competent for teaching and scientific research work in related fields.

The school has established joint PHD programs with international partner universities including TU-Berlin, TIT, UMich, UPM, and Newcastle University, and long-term academic communication with institutes and universities, such as the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of Miami, UC Berkeley, Purdue University, Imperial College London, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, and the University of Tokyo.
