Materials science and engineering is an interdisciplinary field that explores the interrelationships among "the structure, properties, preparation processes, and applications" of substances. From the semiconductor materials in mobile phone chips to the wear-resistant steel for high-speed rail tracks, the high-temperature resistant coatings for spacecraft, the degradable plastic packaging, and the photovoltaic materials that can generate electricity, all these fall within its research scope. It is hailed as the "foundation of industry", and almost all technological innovations are inseparable from breakthroughs in materials - for instance, the increase in the energy density of lithium batteries has promoted the popularization of electric vehicles, and the discovery of high-temperature superconducting materials may completely change the mode of power transmission.
