The THE World University Rankings 2025 are published!

In THE Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, Chinese mainland universities have steadily risen, continuing to move towards the world's top 10.

Tsinghua University topped the list of Chinese mainland universities for the seventh consecutive year, ranking 12th in the world.

More than 20 mainland Chinese universities have improved their rankings.

The highest-ranked institution in Hong Kong, China, is the University of Hong Kong, ranked 35th in the world. The Chinese University of Hong Kong rose from 53rd to 44th in the world ranking and entered the world's top 50.

The number of Chinese mainland universities on the list increased from 86 to 94.

The University of Oxford has retained the top spot for the ninth consecutive year, making it the longest-running university in the list's history.

MIT, ranked second in the world, is the new leader in the United States.

Chinese universities are once again among the world's top 10


The Chinese mainland's top-ranked Tsinghua University holds on to 12th place in the world

The Chinese mainland's second-ranked Peking University rose from 14th to 13th in the world.

Tsinghua University retained the top spot for the seventh consecutive year, while Fudan University and Zhejiang University made a strong showing in the ranking, jumping to 36th and 47th respectively. This is also the first time that Zhejiang University has entered the global top 50.

A total of 94 universities from the Chinese mainland made the list, up from 86 last year. 

Seven years ago, in 2018, there were only two Chinese institutions in the top 100.

Compared with the rest of the world, mainland Chinese universities have made the greatest improvement in the past five years, with an overall score of 43.8 in 2025, compared with 33.0 in 2020.
