She’s here to share her exciting journey and experiences studying at Tianjin University!

Studying abroad and leaving everything behind is no easy feat. It is thrilling, challenging, and full of adventures all at the same time. As a Nepali girl who took a plunge on her journey to study in China, I can tell the guts needed to adjust to a foreign country. Today, I want to share my real-life experiences and the lessons I learned as I navigated through the challenges that came my way.

Let's start with some memories from last year. Starting university in China was a mix of emotions for me, as it was a fresh start but also felt restrictive. Being someone who doesn't adapt well to change, I struggled and questioned my decisions, a sentiment I know many share. Getting used to a new culture and lifestyle took time and required an open mind and I was continuously comparing. Even though China being my neighbor country and we shared a lot, there were differences in how we see development and systems. One thing that stood out was how willing Chinese people are to help. I vividly recall a time when I was lost on my way back to the dorm. I approached a stranger asking him for assistance and he was very kind to guide me. This act of kindness left a lasting impression for me.

Now, I feel grateful to have stepped out of my comfort zone. In my second year at Tianjin University, I've had more time to explore and enjoy. It's great to meet people from all over, speaking different languages. Yet, we all are connected by English. This year, I had the honor of becoming one of the University’s Student ambassador, a role that has significantly contributed to my personal development. Also, I feel grateful to have access to enormous sources of information and support we get as students. I love how passionate our teachers are. I'm thankful for this chance and the growth it's brought me.

On the other hand, and in all honesty, it's not all sunshine and roses. It can also be hard and demanding. The language barrier is a tough nut to crack. I have to translate into Chinese when I shop or read menus in restaurants. To overcome this, I have been actively practicing and improving my Chinese but it is still very hard to communicate with Chinese people. Also, food adaptability posed challenge that every international student should consider. I found myself missing the taste of Nepali cuisine despite enjoying some Chinese dishes. Interestingly, this transformed me into a skilled cook. Preparing my own Nepali meals at the dorm satisfied my cravings and also helped save money that would have otherwise been spent on eating out. Finally, the biggest challenge has been homesickness with a strong desire to be with my family. Despite the distance, the wonders of technology enabled daily video calls and sharing photos and videos has kept me connected.

Thus, my experience as an international student in China has been challenging yet profoundly meaningful. Tianjin University, with its supportive environment, diverse student body, and relaxing green spaces, has been an excellent place for learning and personal growth. These experiences have helped me discover a stronger and more patient version of myself. I've learned to appreciate the love and support I receive, and I've gained the ability to motivate myself and work hard. Ultimately, I've realized that we are stronger than our own expectations and it’s a lesson I’ll carry with me always.
