Silk Road Scholarship 2027: Who Is Eligible, What It Covers and When to Apply

The Silk Road Scholarship is a full Chinese Government Scholarship for students from Belt and Road countries. It covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly living allowance and medical insurance, and applications for the 2027 intake are handled by Chinese universities rather than by embassies. For students who plan to study in China next year, the strongest applications are prepared well before the official window opens.

Each year, thousands of international students ask us the same question: am I eligible, and what does the scholarship actually pay for? In our years of supporting students from Belt and Road countries who want to study in China, we have found that confusion about eligibility — not grades — is the most common reason good applicants miss this award.

What Is the Silk Road Scholarship?

The Silk Road Scholarship is part of the Chinese Government Scholarship system, established by the Ministry of Education of China for students from countries along the Belt and Road. Unlike embassy-track scholarships, it is administered through Chinese universities, which means you apply through a university and the university nominates you.

This matters in practice. Choosing the right universities is as important as preparing strong documents, because each university holds its own quota and sets its own timeline.

Who Can Apply?

According to the official scholarship guidelines, applicants must be citizens of a Belt and Road country, in good health, and not already holding another Chinese Government Scholarship. Age limits apply and vary by degree level, with the strictest limit for undergraduate applicants. You also need the previous qualification: a high school diploma for a bachelor's degree, a bachelor's degree for a master's, and a master's degree for doctoral study.

Language requirements depend on the programme. Many Silk Road programmes are taught in English and accept an IELTS score or a medium-of-instruction letter in place of Chinese proficiency. Chinese-taught programmes normally require a recognised HSK certificate.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

A full award normally covers the whole study period. Tuition is paid in full. Students are offered free on-campus accommodation, or a monthly accommodation subsidy if they prefer to live off campus, where day-to-day costs vary widely between cities. A living allowance is paid every month, with doctoral students receiving the highest amount, and comprehensive medical insurance is included for the entire stay.

Some universities add benefits of their own, such as a settlement allowance or free Chinese language training before the degree begins. These details vary between institutions, so always read your offer letter carefully.

When Should You Apply?

Universities open their Silk Road application windows at different times, mostly in the first half of the year for the autumn intake, and some begin accepting pre-applications well before that. The timeline that works for most successful applicants is simple: shortlist universities and prepare your documents in the months before the window, submit as soon as it opens, and leave time afterwards for interviews, nomination and visa processing.
