2027 Foundation Program for Medical Students: Your Bridge to an MBBS in China

The Foundation Program for Medical Students is a preparatory year at Ningxia Medical University designed for international students preparing to study in China on a medical degree and want to arrive ready. It builds your Chinese language, your science knowledge and your familiarity with the Chinese university classroom before you enter an English-medium MBBS programme, and applications for the spring intake are open now.

Why a Foundation Year Comes First

Medicine is one of the most demanding subjects you can study in China, and the first year of an MBBS programme does not wait for anyone. Students arrive from many different school systems, with different science backgrounds and different levels of Chinese. The foundation year exists to close that gap before the real race begins.

During the programme you study Chinese from the level you actually start at, alongside bridging courses in mathematics, chemistry and biology that are taught to the standard Chinese medical schools expect. Just as important, you learn how a Chinese university works: how classes are structured, how examinations are graded, and how to live and study in a new environment while the stakes are still low.

What You Will Study

The curriculum combines language and science in a single intensive year. Chinese courses cover listening, speaking, reading and writing, with additional medical Chinese and medical English so that you learn the vocabulary of the hospital as well as the vocabulary of daily life. The bridge courses revisit the core science subjects from senior high school and push them towards university level.

There are also visits to the university's affiliated hospital, which give you an early, realistic look at the clinical environment you are working towards. Many students say these visits are the moment their ambition stops being abstract.

Who Should Apply

The programme is open to international students who hold a high school qualification or equivalent and whose science subjects and English are at a solid level. It suits two groups in particular: students whose grades are good enough for medical study but whose Chinese needs a year of structured preparation, and students whose school system differs enough from the Chinese one that a bridging year will make the difference once the MBBS begins. For both groups, the foundation year turns an uncertain start into a planned one — the smartest first step for anyone who wants to study in China as a doctor in the making.

Where the Programme Leads

Students who complete the foundation year progress to the English-medium MBBS at Chinese medical universities listed by the Ministry of Education. A Chinese MBBS is recognised internationally, and graduates go on to sit the medical licensing examinations of their home countries and of bodies such as those in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. How to Apply Through SICAS

SICAS handles the whole application for you: choosing the right intake, preparing the documents Chinese medical universities require, planning the realistic cost of studying in China, and preparing you for the Chinese language expectations that continue into the degree itself — many medical schools ask for a recognised HSK certificate before graduation. The spring intake closes early in the year, and students who prepare their files first are reviewed first.
