The core of materials processing engineering lies in altering the shape, size, structure or properties of materials through physical, chemical or mechanical means, in order to meet the usage requirements of specific products. The research focuses include:
The process principles during material processing (such as the crystallization laws of metals after melting, the flow characteristics of plastics after heating);
The relationship between processing techniques and material properties (such as how forging can enhance metal strength by refining grains);
The design and optimization of processing equipment (such as parameter adjustment of 3D printers, automatic control of rolling mills);
Quality defect control during the processing process (such as prevention of cracks during welding, elimination of gas pores in castings).
The difference between it and materials science lies in the following: Materials science focuses more on "the composition and structure of the materials themselves", while materials processing engineering focuses more on "how to use processes to transform materials into products".
