Beijing Foreign Studies University, or BFSU, located in the Haidian District of Beijing, where the key institutions of higher education and high-tech industries are concentrated, is divided into two campuses – the West Campus and the East Campus. BFSU covers a total area of 492,000 square meters and enjoys access to convenient transportation, with the Third Ring Road running through the two campuses.
Distinctive Features and Advantages
Founded in 1941, BFSU is a prestigious university in China under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is one of China’s top universities listed under Project 985 and Project 211, both comprising top universities in China. BFSU is one of China’s oldest language universities. It is the first institution specializing in foreign language studies. It has the longest history among universities of its kind in China, offering a complete range of degrees, diplomas and programs at various levels, with the largest number of foreign language programs in the country.BFSU is also one of the first universities in China to accept international students.
Today, BFSU teaches 101 foreign languages and 121 bachelor degree programs. Excellence in the teaching and research of foreign language and literature has allowed BFSU to enjoy a good reputation for its quality programs, both at home and internationally. In 2017, BFSU was successfully chosen as one of China’s top universities which will participate in the country’s construction plan of world-class universities and first-class disciplines comprising top universities in China. Its core discipline is under construction is Foreign Languages and Literature.
Guided by its motto “Learn with an open mind; Serve a great cause”, BFSU has, over the years, produced a large number of qualified professionals with language competence who, after graduation, work in and outside China as diplomats, translators/interpreters, educators, businessmen/women, journalists, lawyers, bankers, etc. Among BFSU alumni, over 400 have worked as ambassadors and over 2,000 as counselors. BFSU is thus known as “ a cradle for diplomats”.
Teaching Institutions
Today BFSU has 33 teaching and research institutions. Among them, schools, colleges and institutes recruiting international students include School of Chinese Language and Literature, School of English and International Studies, School of International Business, School of International Relations and Diplomacy, Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, School of Law, School of International Journalism and Communication, School of Asian and African Language, School of European Languages and Cultures, School of Russian language, of Arabic Studies, National Research Center for Foreign Language Education, Department of Japanese, International Institute of Chinese Studies, etc.
Faculty
BFSU attaches great importance to academic development of its faculty. It now has over 1,200 full-time teachers and supporting staff and nearly 200 foreign teachers from 60 countries and regions. Over 90% of the teachers have experiences of overseas study.
Library Holdings
The BFSU Library has nearly 1.45 million copies of printed books, over 2.22 million e-books, 1,123 periodicals, and 97 databases, all in Chinese and other languages and featuring mainly on language, literature and culture. In recent years, the Library has increased its collections involving politics, law, diplomacy, economics, journalism and management. It continues to make use of the latest information technology to build an open, interconnected, smart, innovative and integrated information structure, producing a number of remarkable results such as a multilingual official website, BFSU Online, a software platform, etc. Launched in 2015, the multilingual official website operates in 50 languages. In 2018, BFSU was listed as one of the pilots under a MOE program to promote AI technology application in Chinese universities.
International Communication and Cooperation
To enhance its international exposure, BFSU works in partnership with 313 universities and academic institutions in 91 countries and regions. It has cooperation programs with many foreign universities, including the University of Nottingham, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), INALCO, Moscow State Linguistic University, University of G?ttingen, Sapienza University of Rome, E?tv?s Loránd University, Jagiellonian University, etc.BFSU also works as a partner with foreign universities to operate 23 Confucius Institutes and Classrooms in 18 countries.
Employment Situation
By October 31 2019, the employment rate for graduates with a bachelor’s degree is 94.69%, the employment rate for graduates with a master’s degree is 93.24%, and the employment rate for graduates with a doctor’s degree is 94.12%.
