Founded in September, 1950, Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST) is located in the beautiful costal city of Qingdao known as the “Eastern Switzerland”, it was formerly known as Qingdao Institute of Chemical Technology. It got its present name in March of 2002 after the approval of the Education Ministry of China.
QUST has two campuses: the Sifang Campus has a space area of 300,000M 2 , and the Laoshan Campus, covering 300,000M 2 , situates in the beautiful Old Stone Man National Tourist Resort. QUST has a staff of more than 2000, with 675 of them holding professorship, and 23,443 students, 1025 of them are postgraduates or PhD students.
QUST has 7 PhD majors, 49 Master's degree majors, and 56 Bachelor's degree majors. Its majors around Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Information and Controlling Engineering etc. have played important roles in China.
QUST always takes teaching as its core, and has educated more than 70,000 high-level professional talents for the society. It emphasizes scientific research as well and has created a “QUST Phenomenon”. In the past decade, QUST has won 13 State Technical Invention Prizes and State Science and Technology Progress Prizes. According to the ranking parade about the situation of gaining 3 State Technical Achievement Prizes among the state general universities conducted by the Central Educational Institute for the period of 1997 to 1999, QUST ranks 5th for State Technical Invention Prize, and 74 th for State Science and Technology Progress Prize. And it ranks 67th according to “The List of Universities of the Patent Application Figure”(1985-2000) issued by the Technical Developing Center of Education Ministry. And it ranks 46th according to record dissertations for SCI in 2005 and 100th for EI.
QUST develops rapidly in co-operation and exchange with foreign institutions. It has already established Sister University relationship with 24 universities of many countries like Russia, Germany, Korea, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, and USA. And it starts 10 joint-education programs with universities of Germany, Korea, France, USA, Estonia and Canada. The Sino-Germany Technical College co-established by Paderborn University (Germany) and QUST is considered as a model in both China and Germany.
Every year there are about 150 long-term foreign students and over 300 short-term ones studying in QUST. They are mainly from Korea, USA, Russia, Viet Nam, Germany, Japan, Pakistan, etc.
Every year, QUST employs about 30 foreign experts and teachers to teach English, German, Japanese, Russian, Korean, and academic courses. And it also sends teachers and students abroad teaching and studying in foreign universities.
QUST aims to develop itself into a world famous teaching and research university offering academic degrees in Science, Engineering, Business, Management, Humanities, Medicine, Law, etc
