Xi'an University of Technology is a key university in Shaanxi Province, a high-level institution with domestic first-class discipline construction capabilities, a pilot university for "Outstanding Engineering Education and Training" by the Ministry of Education, one of the members of the "Seven Sons of the Military Industry" in China, the only university in the northwest region of China that offers complete education and training programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels for the military industry, and a university jointly built by the Shaanxi Provincial Government, the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau, China National Armament Industry Group Co., Ltd., and China National Armament Equipment Group Co., Ltd. It is also one of the initiators of the B8 Collaborative Innovation Alliance (China Military Industry Collaborative Innovation Alliance). 

The school is specialized in military industry and excels in it. It was founded in 1955 and is a key military industry project included in the "First Five-Year Plan" of the state. In 1965, it was renamed Xi'an Institute of Technology and became the only undergraduate institution in the military industry sector in Northwest China. The school has been under the management of military industry ministries since its establishment. In 1999, it was transferred from the original Armament Industry Corporation of China to the management of Shaanxi Province. In 2006, it was renamed Xi'an University of Technology.
